WHY COME TO HAMPI?

Hampi is located in hilly terrain formed by granite boulders on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in east-central Karnataka. The region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to impressive monuments, which are part of the Vijayanagara Empire Ruins.

With its unique landscape and historical backround,  Hampi is today one of the most beloved tourist attraction in all Karnataka.

Hampi and the Krishkinda area are stunning not only for their architectural ruins and historic temples, but also for the flora and fauna with rich biodiversity. Not many people know that Hampi is an ecotourism area with precious birds and wildlife. The rocky hills, scrub jungle, mighty Tungabhadra River, lakes, irrigation canals and fertile farmlands are for example home to more than 230 species of resident and migratory birds, making it a great destination for bird watching.

Therefore, it is also worth a visit to learn about the different species of birds and animals.

CLIMBING & OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IN HAMPI

Granite boulders as far as your eyes can see.

Not just Hampi, the landscape of the Krishkinda area covers about 300 square kilometers, with large and small granite boulders scattered in all directions. The massive granite boulders making up the majority of its topography.

The potential for climbing in this area is endless, with many square kilometers of boulders still to be explored and developed.

Infinity of unclimbed boulders. A dream for every climber.

Whether you are an amateur boulderer or a more experienced climber looking for new problems away from the well-trodden paths, you are sure to find what you are looking for in this area.

Since the early 1980s, Hampi has been on the list of secretly shared places among the old hand boulderers. This changed with the sensational climbing documentary "Pilgrimage" released in 2003 by the well-known climbing filmmaker Josh Lowell featuring Chris Sharma and his friends Katie Brown and Nate Gold. The documentary created a special interest among bouldering fans all over the world. Since then, it has become an international hub for bouldering, and you can meet many like-minded climbing enthusiasts here.

Bouldering is the most popular form of rock climbing in Hampi (Krishkinda area). Climbing up these rock formations gives you a great view of the breathtaking surrounding landscape and of the monuments in the distance. So far there are relatively few bolted lines for sport climbing. However, our team is working with other climbing enthusiasts to develop more and more sport climbing routes.

But this area is not just the perfect playground for beginner and expert climbers. It has also a big potential for a lot of different outdoor/adventure activities. Slacklining is one of these adventure sports. The first highline in India was stretched between the Rishimuk Hill in 2014. Since then, Jerry has been able to find several places for slacklining and has, among other places, fixed 11  waterlines over the Tungabhadra River.

In the future, the Golden Boulders team will introduce you to more adventure sports in this breathtaking environment.

WHEN TO COME TO HAMPI?

MAIN SEASON

OCTOBER - FEBRUARY

The main season to visit Hampi (Krishkinda area) is during the months of October to February, when the climate is quite cool and pleasant for outdoor activities. The temperature in the daytime ranges in between 28ºC and 30ºC and in night time between 18ºC and 22ºC. In the main season there is almost no rain. The coolest months are November and December.

In the winter season, the biodiversity increases. Birds that are winter visitors in India can be found everywhere in the region.

OFF-SEASON

MARCH - SEPTMEBER

If you don’t mind a bit of hot climate you can vitit Hampi (Krishkinda area) in the summer. Summer pickups momentum from February onward. March to June is really hot, the temperature can past the mark of 40ºC.

One way of managing the heat is to start early (around sunrise), take a long mid-day break and start again in the evening. You can also choose the "hiding strategy" for minimizing direct sunlight a bit. Therefore, choose the boulders that are in the shade, depending on the time of day. Or you can explore the natural caves. Around July the monsoon (rainy season) arrives, making the boulders wet and slippery. However, the boulder dries very quickly due to the heat, so that climbing is possible again.  By August monsoon recedes but the heat still persists, though on the decline.

ABOUT
GOLDEN BOULDERS

Hello, I’m Jerry (Vikram), a professional rock climber and certified adventure instructor based in Hampi, Karnataka.

I am a local from Hampi and grew up here in the breath-taking nature surrounded by rock formations. For me, climbing the boulders was the most natural thing to do from a young age. This game turned into my passion at the age of 14, when I started climbing professionally.

I turned my passion for climbing into my profession 10years ago when I opened the first climbing shop in the area with a friend (“Tom and Jerry Climbing Shop”).  Since 2019 I run a climbing and adventure shop on my own under the name "Golden Boulders Climbing & Adventure Shop". Our activities aim to reconnect children and adults with nature and to experience themselves in different activities. We do this through classes, day trips or longer programs. In my 10 years of professional experience as a climbing and adventure instructor, I have been able to gain a wide range of experience.

At “Golden Boulders Climbing & Adventure Shop” we carry out the adventure activities with the highest safety standards. In order to guarantee the safety of my clients, I regularly participate in professional trainings. I am certified several times, by national and international institutions:

  • Wilderness First Responder

 (NOLS WILDERNESS MEDICINE; US)

  • Adventure Guide

(NOPASA; India)

  • Top Rope Guide Course

(Professional Climbing Guides Institute; US)
